The California Water Alliance (CalWA) is excited to announce the 2024 Aquatini Golf Tournament, scheduled for November 11th at the Belmont Country Club. This highly anticipated event is a perfect blend of fun, community engagement, and raising awareness about California’s most pressing resource: water. We will also be honoring Veteran’s that day by partnering with Central Valley Honor Flight to make sure some of the proceeds go to supporting Veterans.
California’s water management challenges have been a persistent issue due to factors like drought, climate change, and growing demands from agriculture, industry, and urban communities. The state has one of the most complex water distribution systems in the world, supplying millions of residents, supporting agricultural production, and preserving vital ecosystems.
CalWA is working on addressing these issues by advocating for infrastructure improvements, policy reforms, and public education. Its initiatives aim to secure water supplies for California’s communities while ensuring environmental sustainability and agricultural viability with a focus on the Central Valley of California.
The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), passed in 2014, is a landmark legislation that aims to regulate groundwater resources for long-term sustainability. Groundwater has been a critical “safety net” for many agricultural regions during drought years. SGMA requires local agencies to develop and implement plans to manage groundwater usage sustainably by 2040.
Farmers and local agencies face challenges in reducing groundwater pumping while trying to maintain agricultural productivity. CalWA is engaged in discussions about SGMA’s impact, advocating for a balanced approach that considers the economic realities of farming alongside the need for sustainable water management. We want to be there to make a difference and events like this help fund those efforts.
