Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Bill Harrison, founder and managing partner of the Harrison Company. Harrison Company specializes in advising founder-run and family businesses in mergers, acquisitions and capitalization. Harrison was speaking at a water conference in Kern County when he presented The 100 Mile Circle. This report available here, makes the case for the importance of the San Joaquin Valley to human survival. If you were to place a pin in the middle of the City of Fresno and draw a circle, 100 miles in diameter it would represent a land area of less than one percent of the total landmass of the United States. But this same circle produces 60 percent of the nation’s fruits and nuts and more than 30 percent of its vegetables.
This report shows how the biggest threat to this vital area is indifference. This indifference has resulted in tremendously underfunded infrastructure investment and spending, draconian regulatory schemes and generally a woeful lack of public understanding of how critical a role food production plays in our society, national security and economic position.
Think about it; we haven’t had any significant infrastructure improvements in California since the 1960s when 16-million people lived here. Now we’re trying to address the needs of 40-million people and the environment with 60-year old fish screens and conveyance systems. California’s political leaders may boast about this state being the fifth to seventh (depending on who’s boasting) economy on earth but every last person who works to make this happen has to eat and all food depends on accessible water supplies.
