A Statement by the Water Blueprint for the San Joaquin Valley on the Combined Federal and State Efforts to Improve Water Supplies for the San Joaquin Valley:
The Water Blueprint for the San Joaquin Valley expresses its appreciation to both President Trump and Governor Newsom for their concerted efforts to address the chronic water supply shortages that have long plagued our region.
We are encouraged by the decisive actions taken by both leaders, who have directed their respective agencies to remove obstacles and identify specific solutions to deliver more water to the San Joaquin Valley. This bipartisan approach demonstrates a shared commitment to resolving a critical issue that has had a devastating effect on the farms that produce much of the nation’s food, the livelihoods of countless residents, and the economic vitality of our communities.
Through their respective Executive Orders, both President Trump and Governor Newsom have created a path to reduce or suspend regulatory impediments to meeting the San Joaquin Valley’s critical water supply needs.
The San Joaquin Valley has long been ground zero for water supply reductions, bearing the brunt of California’s water challenges for years. We deeply appreciate the efforts from both the federal and state administrations to remove impediments to delivering existing water supplies and improving our ability to divert and store floodwaters from imminent storms expected in the state this week and beyond.
The significant benefit of these initiatives to our rural communities and the region’s economy cannot be overstated. A stable and reliable water supply is the lifeblood of our agricultural sector, which not only feeds the nation but also serves as a cornerstone of the local economy.
As we look forward to working with federal and state agencies to implement practical water supply solutions, we are reminded of the pioneering state and federal partnership initiated in 1962 between then Governor Edmund G. “Pat” Brown and President John F. Kennedy. That partnership helped build San Luis Reservoir, an integral component of the water supply infrastructure we still depend on today. This collaborative approach between different levels of government gives us hope for meaningful progress in addressing our long-standing water challenges.
The Water Blueprint for the San Joaquin Valley remains committed to supporting these efforts and advocating for policies that balance the needs of our communities, agriculture, and the environment. We are optimistic that with continued focus and cooperation, we can achieve lasting solutions to secure the water resources vital for the prosperity of the San Joaquin Valley.
